We are human, and we are imperfect. Our lives are imperfect. Our characters are also, quite imperfect.
Often times we find it difficult to find that balance and contentment in our lives. We are constantly worried about our grades, our families, our goals and dreams, our past, present, and future, and so much more. But remember, we are only human, which therefore makes it acceptable to feel that way. On the surface, every person’s life seems picture perfect. Through a bright smile or contagious laugh, people are able to push away their sadness and anger, thoughts and frustrations, and ultimately their emotions that are deeply hidden in the silent chambers of their hearts.
Every single person is struggling to move onto the next level in his or her dunya. Alhamdulillah, Monday is a good day. You woke up for Fajr on time, had some delicious breakfast, and decided to start the day with pure intentions and a simple utterance of Bismillah. By the middle of the week you feel great. You feel confident, and are finally content with your life among the web of challenges you are facing on your personal battlefield. Then Friday comes, and you begin to fall. Whether it was receiving a bad grade, or getting in a fight with your roommates (JK love you 10B), your mood is off and you lose that balance and that feeling of contentment. That is when most people usually begin to internally or externally explode. Internally may be through feeling lost, empty, or even upset, and externally may be through vocalizing those emotions to a friend. Subhanallah, there are so many ways we can express ourselves. In the end though, I learned that it is important to find the true beauty and purpose through the midst of it all.
Finding contentment is a solution to many of our problems. We may be agitated with the situation we are in, or impatient with our parents who unconditionally love and care for us which we don’t always see. In times of hardship and ease, we are always told to thank our Creator by saying Alhamdulillah at the least. We are told that behind one closed door of happiness, another door opens. Sometimes we are told the most cliché of things, like “everything happens for a reason.” We find that support and reassurance through these phrases people will tell you. But it may not always be sufficient enough to fill the emptiness in our hearts, because the battlefield you are facing is different and at times, indescribable to the battlefield the person is facing right next to you. To reiterate, we are human, which makes it acceptable to feel that way.
It mainly comes down to you, and how you will support yourself, carry yourself, and bring upon contentment and peace to yourself. There is beauty behind every task, struggle, and challenge you’re encountering. Allah may be testing a quality you wish to have, whether it’s humility or sympathy through a heated discussion. He may be testing you to see how well you will handle the given conditions in life. He may be using that challenge to push you onto an entire different platform in the end.
As the Prophet (SAW) said, “and know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried” (Tirmidhi).
Your life ahead of you – every movement, activity, gathering, etc. – is already set in stone by the will of Allah (swt). So open up your heart. Find peace and contentment in the little things. Listen to Qur’an or speak to your Creator. Live your life and cherish these precious moments with your loved ones today and tomorrow. Value your time and use it wisely. And most importantly, be kind and mindful of others. A smile or a warm Salam goes a long way.
Find your contentment in your own unique way.
