February 14th is right around the corner and we all know what that means. A flurry of pink, hearts, valentines, and love quotes all smashed together and showcased as the most romantic holiday of the year: Valentine’s Day. The traditionally Hallmark-esque holiday calls for passionate and daring expressions of love. However, when the clock strikes midnight and the day comes to an end, these passionate expressions die down. Sadly, for many, these feelings are limited to one day. Yet, as Muslims we are often told that we should love one another for the sake of Allah (swt); we should love constantly, as Allah (swt) always loves us. But what does this mean?
Loving one for the sake of Allah is a love that is bound by the blessings and mercy of Allah (swt). Upon meeting one another you remember Allah (swt), and upon departing you remember Allah (swt).

On the Day of Judgement, Allah (swt) will question humanity asking,
“Where are those who loved each other for the sake of My glory? Today, on a day when there is no shade but Mine, I shall shade them with My shade” (Muslim).
The Prophet (S) often spoke of those who will be granted this noble status. He said, “Among Allah’s servants are people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, but whom the prophets and martyrs will deem fortunate because of their high status with Allah.” The Companions were quick to ask who these people were, and our beloved Rasulullah (S) said that these are the people who loved each other for Allah’s sake, even without being related to one another or being tied to one another by the exchange of wealth. He continued to describe how on the Day of Judgement, “By Allah, their faces will be luminous and they will be upon light. They will feel no fear when the people will be feeling fear, and they will feel no grief when the people will be grieving” (Abu Dawud).
Unfortunately, today’s Muslim society tends to shy away from the subject of "love". However, by doing this we are unconsciously opposing what our deen and sunnah teaches us. All who met the Prophet (S) felt loved by him. He never let any occasion pass without spreading love and purity among the ranks of the Ummah.
Insha’Allah this week, let us sincerely try to foster this love within our own communities!
