Think about an unexpectedly awesome conversation you had. Think about a time where you may have been a tag-along, but you felt like part of the group; when you saw your friend and he or she introduced the other person they were with, letting you create bonds of friendship with that person as well.
The wisdom of the actions of the Prophet (peace by upon him) are reiterated in the hadith:
“Should there be three of you, then let not two of them be in conversation to the exclusion of the third, because this will hurt him.” (Related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
This can apply to multiple situations in our lives. It can be applied literally. We can implement it by making sure someone is included in the conversation if they happen to walk in during the middle of a conversation. It is a way for to help a person feel comfortable in a situation or in an environment.
If there is a shy person in the room, they might be afraid to speak up, but if the effort is made to include the person, they won’t have to worry about their own insecurities about social interactions—you help them skill over the hard part.
This is especially relevant to instances where there is a “new kid” who doesn’t know anyone but wants to fit in. I always have the greatest appreciation for people who to make me welcome if I go to a new place and don’t know a single person.
This also alludes to being inclusive of someone who may be different than you. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of sticking with people that you know and leaving the odd-ball in the room to “do their own thing”.
Being inclusive of everyone helps create a strong community and helps form bridges between people of diverse backgrounds.
