Keeping a secret should be looked at as an act of pure trust and responsibility, and that’s because it is. Whatever the secret, you are being trusted over all others to keep that secret, and that is not something to be taken lightly. And yet, we don’t always consider the gravity of the situation, easily convincing ourselves that spilling the secret to our best friend would not betray the contract into which we entered by accepting the secret because they of course won’t tell anyone. But what guarantees that; what’s to say your best friend won’t have the same thought process as you? Where does the chain end then?
A secret should be thought of as an amanah, a treasure that we were entrusted to protect. Furthermore, we are trusted not only by the one confiding in us, but also by Allah (SWT); being given a secret means that Allah (SWT) trusts you and finds you responsible enough, of all people, to protect this treasure. And how can one lay bare a gem of Allah (SWT)?
So the next time you are privileged with receiving a secret, remember that it truly is a privilege. What makes you special enough to have this secret, you ask? What distinguishes you from the person sitting next to you? That quality, dear brothers and sisters, is Allah (SWT)’s trust in you. Therefore, before you even accept the secret, remember that doing so puts you in an unbreakable pact with Allah (SWT), a pact so special that we should genuinely be honored that such responsibility was placed upon our shoulders, taking special care to give that responsibility its due respect.
