The Prophet (S) said, “Iman wears out in one's heart, just as the dress wears out (becomes thin). Therefore, ask Allah to renew iman in your hearts” [Mustadrak Al Hakim, Authentic].
Every believer suffers from weak or low iman once in a while, and it affects us all in various of ways. Low iman will drop a believer into sorrow and despair, sadness and anxiety, because iman is a safeguard from these things. When we suffer from low iman, it stops us from doing good deeds and removes the productivity in our lives and decreases the khushoo of our worship. One of the beautiful aspects of our deen is that Allah (SWT) and His Messenger (S) have prescribed actions for us when we are suffering from weak iman and feeling sorrow, and one of the best cures is dua.
The following dua was narrated by the Prophet (S) in Saheeh Bukhari. It is narrated in many hadeeth that the Prophet (S) would consistently make this dua, and many of his companions heard him repeat it over and over.
“Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-Huzni wal-'ajazi wal-kasli wal-bukhli wal-jubniwa
dalaEid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.”
“O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men.”
It is very important that we as believers always remember Allah (SWT) when struggling with anything, because everything we are dealing with is a test from Him. A weak iman will lead us to be overcome with negative emotions; we suffer when we are distant from our Lord (SWT). The only way to feel better is by asking for His help in rebuilding our iman.
