It’s normal for many of us to go through our daily routines and to be so absorbed within this dunya. If our parents become angry, we cry. If we don’t do as well on an exam, we become frustrated. These are examples of some natural instantaneous emotions people usually experience when involved in these situations. It’s an internal emotion that we cannot control. It’s okay to cry, to become frustrated, or to get angry - it’s human nature to feel this way. But the problem arises when there is no limit or end to our emotions. We start blaming our given circumstances, each other, and ourselves. We don’t try to take a second to understand the purpose of these occurrences or even this dunya.
If you reflect upon every little thing, your life will not only become substantially easier but you will also find yourself building a relationship with your Lord. Alhamdulillah, I am the youngest in my household and growing up I found myself to be completely dependent upon others. I didn’t know how to take care of myself and once I started getting older, it was hard for me to handle things on my own. I went through a phase of trying to control myself and I began turning to Allah (swt). At that point in my life, I felt like I had a listener, a supporter, and a giver. I kept speaking to my Lord and that was immediately when I started seeing the light in all other things. That was when I began understanding my Creator and His decisions that had impacted my dunya. That was when I analyzed every action, situation, or outcome and took it to a whole new level in finding Allah’s message. And that was when I saw the absolute beauty behind Allah (swt), the most gracious and the most merciful.
Reflection is healthy and important. It’s a method in understanding the past, releasing your thoughts in the present, and preparing yourself for the future. If you take a moment to reflect and take the next step in connecting it back to Allah (swt), InshaAllah it will help you find yourself and your relationship with Him. Again, it’s normal and so incredibly easy for us all to get so absorbed within this dunya. It takes time and much effort in getting to that level, but it isn’t impossible.
Once I was in a heated argument with one of my siblings and at the end, I was trying to figure out why it had occurred. I kept beating myself about it and then I eventually questioned myself – maybe Allah’s teaching me how to be calm? Patient? To learn how to handle these types of situations in the future? – These questions were all linked back to the concept of reflection, and to the very next step in simply finding that deeper meaning and getting a glimpse of our Creator.
Remember what Umar ibn al-Khattab said: “No amount of guilt can change the past and no amount of worrying can change the future. Go easy on yourself for the outcome of all affairs is determined by Allah’s Decree. If something is meant to go elsewhere, it will never come your way, but if it is yours by destiny, from you it cannot flee.”
Say Bismillah, then observe, learn, reflect, and apply.
