A man asked the Prophet (S): “What is the best thing in Islam?” He replied, “Feeding others and giving the greeting of salaam to those whom you know and those whom you do not know” (Bukhari 12).
We may not know this, but replying to a salaam is Fard (obligation) upon all Muslims. Our beloved Prophet (S) stated, each Muslim has five rights over his fellow Muslim: he should return his salaams, visit him when he is sick, attend his funeral, accept his invitation, and pray for mercy for him when he sneezes” (Bukhari 1240).
The simplest one of these five rights is saying salaam to one another. We are all guilty of passing up a Muslim we do not know without saying salaam. Genuinely smiling and greeting your fellow Muslims can brighten up their day as well as yours.
Not only should we say salaam to our fellow Muslims but to everyone we meet. This might seem like an odd thing to do since non-Muslims do not know what this phrase means and you might feel embarrassed to do such a thing. However this is a great way to spread the word of Islam and gain even more blessings from Allah. The non-Muslims, upon hearing this phrase, will ask what it means. This is the chance to introduce Islam and teach them the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). So now what? Take it a step further and gain more blessings by spreading the meaning of this beautiful faith by greeting everyone with a simple phrase: Assalamualaikum.
