Our parents are our greatest blessing from Allah (swt). Every time I listen to this nasheed, it brings tears to my eyes. Just thinking about how much our parents love us is unimaginable. May Allah (swt) bless our parents with Janah-tul-Firdaus and may He always keep them happy in this life and the next.
I, like many college students, live on campus. Commuting is really not my thing! #aintnobodygottimeforthat Hashtags aside, I feel that I miss out on a lot while on campus. Often, I stay on campus during the weekend to study for an exam. My family and extended family throw many parties over the weekend that I miss. I see pictures on Facebook the next day, and see posts by my sisters and cousins. I think, "Wow, I can't believe I missed that!" I miss out on the good news of when a cousin is getting married, having a baby, or just any general topics, and it really annoys me! When I do go home, my sisters, cousins, and I usually hang out. We go to the mall, see a movie, or have a sleep over. Saturday comes full of errands. I go to a weekly Saturday halaqah, go to the store, and do other things. Then my dad usually drops me back off to campus Sunday mornings. I literally do not sit down with my parents for more than an hour and ask them how they are. I tend to make up an excuse and say I want to relax when I come home, which is why I go out. Yet, what I have realized is that my parents work SO HARD during the week. When it comes to the weekend, they are the ones that should rest. I should sit around and ask them what they need. I shouldn't be running around on the weekends. I, insha'Allah, have my whole life to do that; to always be on the go. I need to best utilize this time I have now and sit down with my parents and converse with them.
Sometimes we forget in our busy lives how important and great our parents are. They literally would sacrifice anything for us. Many of our parents immigrated from their homelands. They left their families behind in hope of a better life. We need to cherish our time with them and appreciate them. Yeah, we may not always get along with our families or agree with their views, but at the end of the day they will always be there. They will always be a constant in our life. So strengthen your family ties so that your family can always be YOUR strength! :) -Hiba Durrani Loyola University Chicago Spring Break is finally here! One week of no class, no work, no studying, and simply just more time to relax. Yet, why is it that we don’t utilize this time with our family? We get so engrossed and consumed with our college life, that we often forget the loved ones we have waiting and wanting us at home, our family. Our family is one of the greatest blessings from Allah (swt). They treat us with gentleness, sacrifice daily for our wellbeing, love us unconditionally, and shield us from harm. Islam teaches us that the beauty of this relationship is none like any other and it is essential for us to grow spiritually closer to Allah (swt)! Our beloved Rasulullah (S) stressed on this concept of strengthening family ties. He believed: “The person who truly protects and looks out for his kin is the one who keeps benefiting them even when they break their relations with him.” He taught us the importance of being blessed with a family backing. It is narrated by Aisha (RA), that the Prophet Muhammad (S) said: “The best of you is he who is the best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family,” The Sunnah also teaches us to help out or family in daily activities or chores. Aisha (RA) said regarding the Prophet Muhammad (S) that: “He used to work for his family, and when he heard the Adhan, he would go out.” (Sahih Bukhari; Volume 7, Book 64, Number 276). Insha'Allah this week let us all spend quality time with our family and help them out in any way that we can, no matter how big or small.
